About Us

The BioNEM laboratory started in 2005 from the need to combine two synergistic fields such as medicine and nanotechnology to give birth to a reality that leads to the development of innovative products in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields.It is one of the few nanotechnology laboratories of Italy set in a hospital.

This gives the chance to touch real and concrete problems and solve them in an optimal manner through close collaboration between the hospital's medical staff and laboratory technologists. Bionem laboratory is an interdisciplinary group which integrates nanotechnology with "classic" research fields from biomedicine. Physicians, biologists, biotechnologists, engineers, chemists, and physicists are today working in the laboratory, giving rise to a continuous exchange of competences and ideas, and naturally producing an interdisciplinary research. The laboratory is well equipped from the nanofabrication as well as from the optical characterization point of view.

The scientific activities of BioNEM laboratory covers different fields of application of nanotechnology to biomedicine, finding a strong interest among the international scientific community and industry sector. BioNEM aims at the development of nanotechnology and microfluidic platforms for the analysis of complex mixtures with a sensitivity down to attomolar concentrations.

This includes:
  • Implementation of micro and nano fluidic devices to pretreat biological samples allowing the isolation of complex mixtures of molecules of interest or to analysis;
  • Development of miniaturized incubation chambers for "high throughput screening" on cells or fractions of cell membranes;
  • Development of nano plasmonic and photonic devices for analysis of individual protein molecules.

  • Nanoimprinting lithography;
  • 2 photon 3D lithography and their combinations.
Advanced microfabrication processing including;
  • Micromilling;
  • Hot embossing;
  • Injection molding;
  • 3d printing;
  • Photolitography;
  • Wet and dry etching and different bonding technology like heat;
  • Plasma;
  • UV and solvent assited bonding.
